Women’s rights organisations call for a ban on surrogacy in Ukraine
Recently international media have published shocking pictures from the Ukrainian surrogacy industry. Newborn babies in large numbers that cannot be picked up by foreign customers due to the countries’ closed borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation has shed light on the inhumane system of trade in reproductive rights that characterizes the surrogacy industry.
Today, 200 women’s organisations are sending a letter to the President of Ukraine, Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, calling for a ban on all forms of trade in children and women.
- The current situation in Ukraine has led to a massive exploitation of impoverished women and stresses the need for stronger protection of women’s rights and makes it clear that the reproductive tourism in Ukraine must stop, says Clara Berglund, International Coalition for the Abolition of Surrogacy Motherhood, ICASM.
The undersigning organisations are calling for a ban on all forms of reproductive trade and for Ukraine to sustain international conventions on the rights of children and women.
